So I tap a key on the laptop keyboard and it wakes up and all the screens come back on. A blank screen (black, gray, or blue) should appear once or more as your Mac starts up. I do have the screen to turn off after 30 minutes, as I wanted the screen to turn off, but nothing else. I might have just found this happens because the monitors (via displaylink) are telling the computer to go to sleep. I believe the computer is going into suspend mode because when I deliberately tell it to suspend (via the shut down menu options), it does the same thing. There is information about this problem here, with one person saying it is related to office chair movement, and another stating that it is from EMF interference in the cables. About 50% of the time ALL screens black out, including the laptop. Sometimes the monitors black out and the windows move to the laptop.ġ. The bigger, related issue, is that the monitors (two Dell monitors attached via HDMI) black out WHILE I'm WORKING.ġ. Note: I have no idea if its a permission issue, thats just my best guess. This will clean up any misplaced file permissions and now the VM will open correctly again. Later I realized that I just need to unplug the USB-C cable going to the DisplayLink and the computer wakes up. Here is the fix: If the VM opens with a black screen, close the window, log into your other Mac user, open the VM there and shut it down. For a bit I thought the only fix was to do a hard restart. Rebooting the external dock the screens are connected to.I have a Mac M1 2020 13" with MacOS Big Sur 11.6.8 and am having the similar issues with the monitors blacking out.įirst I noticed this when I tried to wake the Mac up from sleep.Opening the laptop, unchecking and re-checking screen record permission for DisplayLink in system preferences > security & privacy > screen recording.Tip: If your Mac has a Touch Bar, you can add the Sleep button to the Control Strip. If you have the option on your keyboard, press Option-Command-Media Eject key. Here's the problem I'm having: as soon as I log in AFTER waking the computer from sleep, the screens go black and THE SCREEN RECORD PERMISSION that was working perfectly before sleep IS FORGOTTEN. To put your Mac to sleep, do any of the following: Choose Apple menu > Sleep. The repeatable problem that DisplayLink has not addressed in my posts is whenever my laptop (which is clamshell mode) goes to sleep or I tell it to sleep, it will wake up and the installed "login screen extension status" will wake up the external displays. If DisplayLink icon is in the top menu bar and there's an exclamation point in the icon, you can click and it'll tell you it doesn't have screen record permission. That extension will activate external screens for computer login when your laptop is in clamshell mode. If not, there should be a link to install. You can launch the application click on the icon and see if the "login screen extension status" app is installed. If it's not there, then the application is not running and external displays will not work. Aso reconnecting the USB-C cable the monitors that were working do not detect the laptop any more.Īny ideas on how to investigate or resolve this problem, I can not see anything in the troubleshoot guideĭo you have DisplayLink running and in the top menu bar where you have clock, battery etc.? Look for an icon with 2 interlinked rectangles. On the laptops my touch bar it still believes I have my two monitors connected, but will not display anything on the laptop screen.
